For the Color
  • 2 tablespoons Food Coloring (red) Consider natural dyes if preferred.
  • 2 tablespoons Food Coloring (black) Consider natural dyes if preferred.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Floured Surface
  • parchment paper
  • Baking Sheet
  • Wire Rack

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Gradually pour in warm water, mixing with a wooden spoon until the dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. Cover the kneaded dough with a towel and let it rise in a warm area for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  3. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two portions. Add red food coloring to one portion and black food coloring to the other, kneading each until colors are incorporated.
  4. Roll out each colored dough into equal-sized rectangles. Layer the red dough on top of the black dough and twist together to form a spiral. Shape into a loaf and tuck the ends under.
  5. Place the loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cover with a towel. Let it rise for another 30 minutes until puffed.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the loaf for about 30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sound when tapped.
  7. Transfer the loaf to a wire rack and cool for at least 15-20 minutes before slicing.
